Dosing with CBD for Pets
What’s nice about dosing CBD is you have a ballpark that you can work within to determine the maximum daily dose, we recommend that you do not give more than 1mg per 2.2 lbs.
Make sure to keep an eye on him for a few hours after you first administer CBD; pay attention to the effects it has so you know how to adjust the dose.
What Dosing With CBD Looks Like?
Find a base dosage for the good days and then double or triple that dosage for the bad days.
On a good day, this may mean they are only mildly anxious and just need the edge taken off.
A bad day, could mean they are in a state of extreme anxiety or the sky is about to erupt with thunder. You can often predict if it will be a bad day or not, administer a higher dosage in preparation.
Dosing CBD doesn't have to be confusing!
Some of the best advice we can offer is to monitor how your pet reacts to CBD and make adjustments accordingly. Unlike many drugs, there is little to worry about when increasing dosages.
Some pets react well to low doses, while others need more. We always recommend watching for side effects or abnormalities whenever changing dosages, but if you see your pet reacting well to a higher dose, there is nothing to be concerned about.
Weight and medical condition will determine how much CBD an animal can take not the species of said animal — CBD appears to affect all of us equally.
The dosages are typically administered 1-3 times a day, and we recommend starting in the low tier once a day for the first week before moving up.
For preventive health and aging, the low tier of 0.022 mg/lb or 0.05mg/kg is a great place to start. There’s may be days that you want to increase to the medium tier to help with situational issues like stress or allergies. Most people will only administer CBD once and sometimes twice for preventive health.
For all chronic medical conditions, a dosage that falls in the medium tier — 0.068 mg/lb or 0.15 mg/kg — is preferred by most pet owners. The one exception is clinical insomnia which is likely to require a dosage that falls into the strong tier.
If your pet is not sleeping well due to pain, discomfort, etc. a medium tier dosage may be all that’s needed. Many report better sleep even with low doses of CBD because it helps with other medical issues that may prevent restful sleep.
Hemp CBD is biphasic, and with most dosages, it will have a slight stimulating effect — though it does not appear to be enough to keep your or your pet awake when trying to sleep.
What Happens If You Give Your Pet Too Much CBD?
If you give your pet too much CBD, you may notice that it makes them tired — where a lower dose may have given them a boost in their step. If you notice this side effect, there is little to nothing to worry about.
In fact, some pet owners purposely give their pets high doses of CBD to help with insomnia. Common side effects such as nausea or diarrhea may happen, but they are fairly rare and mild.
If your pet is on a dosage-sensitive prescription drug that’s metabolized in the liver, you’ll likely want to keep CBD dosages mild or low. And consult with your Veterinarian
In many cases, a specific CBD dosage has led to a decrease in the other drug’s dosage with no increase of side effects.
What’s Better For Dosage: CBD Oil, Treats
If you’re looking for precise dosages, our Vigor Pro CBD oil/tincture is still your best option as treats will carry a one-size-fits-all dose.
However, this is not much of a concern as even extremely large doses are well tolerated by most pets with no signs of side effects. Another pro of the tincture is it’s fast absorption rate.
If they need a quicker onset of relief, we recommend Vigor Pro CBD Tincture. The thin tissue of the mouth makes CBD readily absorbable, and you’ll typically see it working within 10-30 minutes depending on how long your pet held the oil in their mouth.
